Research (Film posters & magazine covers)

The Uninvited

The poster for the film the uninvited presents a very conventional horror film poster. The brightness of the film poster is dark, this enforces the genre of the film which is horror. The dark effect on the poster allows audiences to establish the genre of the poster, also it creates suspense and tension for the audience as they are unable to see the character on the poster clearly due to the darkness which leaves them confused about what is happening in the poster this makes them want to watch the film/trailer to see what the film is about. The lack of colour in the poster further enforces the genre of horror and creates the effect of fear for the target audience as the dull colours represent darkness, death and murder.

The image on the poster is a person looking inside the window from the outside, however the persons face is not clear and is dark, therefore audiences will find this attractive as they would want to know who the person is looking in, also the image suits the title which is the uninvited, showing a person looking in a window from outside shows that they are not invited in the house, and therefore raises questions about what is will happen in the film if someone is unwelcome but enter or go the place the film is referring to. The background image is woods, which shows a scary effect as this suggests that the house the characters will be in is in the middle of nowhere. Which adds to the fearful atmosphere of the film. The woods is also a common locations used in horror movies therefore the poster tries to pose the idea of the film while illustrating the woods background in the poster.

The text used on the uninvited poster is white and the title is written in a different font. The title is not aligned in the middle of the bottom of the horror film poster, but instead is at the side of the page and not on a straight line, this may represent lack of stability presented in the horror trailer, as it may suggest to audiences that it is impossible to stay in one place etc. The tagline of the poster is placed just under the characters covered face in very small font therefore it is not very clear to read.
Hatchet
The poster of the film "Hatchet" uses one clear and simple image of a murdering object, which is a close up shot of a hammer covered in blood. This image represents fear and tension to the audience, it also reveals part of the storyline to the audience as the use of the hammer shown as if used as a weapon shows that the film is based around a murderer using this object to kill. On the other hand, the film poster also ensures to keep the identity of the murderer anonymous and only shows the hammer with blood and nothing else. This is so audience are kept wondering about who the killer is and why they are not shown in the picture and as a result would be more willing to go and watch the film or trailer. The use of the black background enforces the genre of horror and reveals the genre through the poster clearly, this is to grab audiences who are interested in horror films. It also makes the weapon more clearer and stand out more for the audience as not including anything in the background coveys that the weapon is a very important aspect of the film.

The text used on the poster is very bright and bold in order for it to be more appealing to audiences. The name of the film is placed at the bottom of the poster in very bold font. This makes it stand out more and not take over or cover essential parts of the image that the audience need to see. The film tagline is placed right at the top of the poster and aligned in the middle in order for audience to find it easy to read. Also the tagline at the top of the page states,"it's not a remake. It's a sequel and it's not based on a Japanese one", this suggests that the film is unique and like no other which encourages audiences to go and watch the film as the tagline is promising them that they will not see something similar to any other horror trailers

Empire magazine(hell boy)

Empire film magazine's front cover uses the image of a character from a film they are trying to advertise. They do this by including a close-up of the main character "hell boy", this shot reveals the film they are trying to advertise to audiences straight away as they will recognise the character from the film, therefore making the magazine cover more appealing. The close-up of the character shows the facial expressions of the character to the audience in order for them to identify the genre of the film on the magazine front cover, audiences will gain a brief insight from the characters facial expressions as he has an evil face expression which makes them distinguish the genre of the film magazine.

The masthead uses a flames effect and is red/orange this represents horror and fright to the audience as these colours have such symbolism for the audience. The masthead is also appealing to the audience as it is the "Empire" magazine which is known by many audiences and is popular, therefore it would appeal to many people. For this reason some of the characters head is covering the masthead, as audiences are familiar with the magazine therefore don't always need the full magazine name to know that its is the "Empire" magazine.

The title of the film is placed at the bottom of the page in bold font and colour, this makes it easily visible for audiences. Therefore this makes the magazine cover very appealing to audiences and will most likely be bought by many people to read about the film. Around the left side of the image strap lines are included to gain audience's interests, they include other things relating to other films or same genre films for audiences to know that they are able to find other things they may like in the magazine. On the right side of the image a pug is used containing a catchy word such as "sex" audience's to be hooked into reading the magazine.
Total film magazine(Star trek)

Total film magazine front cover uses the image of a character from the film "Star Trek". The image used is a close up of one of the characters from the film, the colour of the image is made dark and black and white, the image of the character is the character directly looking at the audience. This is very appealing to the audience as audiences who know the film or have heard about the film will recognise the character and therefore want to read what is included in the magazine about the film and the character.

Total film magazine have placed the masthead "total film" right at the top of the magazine cover while making the masthead very big and bold as it covers a bit of the characters head from the top. This shows that the masthead is very important and needs to be emphasised in order for the magazine to appeal to audiences and be recognised. At the bottom part of the magazine cover the name of the film is placed large and clear font. This makes it stand out and therefore allows audiences to read it better and therefore recognise the film advertised better. The strap lines placed on either sides of the cover all include catchy and interesting news for the audience relating to films.

The magazine cover uses a common colour scheme which is clearly evident, the colour scheme it uses is red and white. These colours make the text and image stand out very well and therefore easier to appeal to audiences.

Fade to blacks then start to be used to start showing the passing of time within the trailer, and start introducing the storyline and events of the film. We then start seeing fast paced fade to blacks which suggest that the characters are getting closer and closer to danger, also to emphasise how scary the movie will start getting and to leave the viewer hanging as all action happens fast therefore the viewer is not able to catch all what is happening. This is the main technique which gets the viewer interested and attracted the audience to go and watch the film, this technique of fast paced fade to blacks also adds to the horror atmosphere the trailer is trying to create. Again continuity editing is used towards the end of the trailer to show the continuity of the storyline and events.
